5/21/2023 0 Comments Tracy Tam by Krystalyn DrownSanta won't be able to deliver all the presents in time! Now, Tracy must fix time and help Santa, but she has no idea how. As a result, three states get knocked out of sync with the rest of the world (oops!). When Tracy attempts to hack into their computers, she accidentally introduces a virus into the system. How else could he know what every little girl and boy wants for Christmas and who has been naughty or nice? In order to test her theories, Tracy sneaks onto Santa's sleigh then ends up at Santa Command, where a team of (gasp!) humans monitor Santa's big night. A flying sleigh can only be powered by jet engines, after all, and Santa's magical abilities can only be the result of altered DNA. She also doesn't believe that Santa can possibly deliver all of those presents in one night, to children around the world, without a little help from science. Tracy Tam doesn't really believe in Santa Claus, at least not like the rest of us do. 5/21/2023 0 Comments American Beauty by Zoey DeanHer pearl-gray Lexus powered down Wilshire Boulevard the Santa Monica mountains stood sentry to the north. "Jealousy is oozing through my phone, Cyn," Anna teased, wriggling the discreet earpiece from her Motorola E815's headset to a more comfortable position. Cyn was still her best friend-one who could let fly with a friendly insult the way other uptown girls tossed off skimpy two-ply cashmere. But whether there were three thousand miles or three blocks between them, it didn't matter. Cynthia Baltres might be living in the intellectual mecca known as New York City, and Anna might now be living in the anti-intellectual sun-dappled overindulgent splendor of Beverly Hills. If a publisher likes it, they make an offer and begin editing. If an agent likes it, they take on the author as a client and submit the book to publishers on their behalf. "In the indie publishing cadence, you publish three to four books a year." Craig Alanson tweet thisįor decades, a novel's progress toward publication followed a standard path: An author toils away on a book, finishes it and submits it to literary agents. His success as an author is notable not only because he releases books at a blistering pace but also because he's on the frontier of an industry that's undergoing considerable changes in how it delivers stories to readers. This month, his Expeditionary Force, a military science fiction adventure series, hit its 13th installment, Fallout. Since 2016, Craig Alanson (the pen name for Craig Odell) has carved out a comfortable living as a self-published author. Aspiring writers face plenty of obstacles: Will their book make it to shelves or into an online store? Will supply chain issues push back the release date? Even if they make it through that gauntlet, will audiences like what they've written? They're going to write full time, supporting their existence on the weight of their imagination. Most every writer who's ever put pen to paper has had the same dream at some point: walking into work and giving notice. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Heart of darkness first editionKuper's images and concise text confront Conrad's colonial attitudes and systemic racism yet leave room for readers to engage with these issues on their own terms. Drawn in pen, black pencil, and ink wash reminiscent of the etchings and lithography of Francisco Goya and Honoré Daumier, Kuper's Heart of Darkness captures the ominous atmosphere and tempo of Charles Marlow's journey up the River Congo. Heart of Darkness (Unabridged Deluxe Edition): An Early Modernist Novel From the Author of Nostromo, Lord Jim, The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes. Now award-winning illustrator Peter Kuper reimagines Conrad's masterpiece for a new generation, transforming this dramatic tale of madness, greed, and evil into something visually immersive and profoundly complex. Heart of Darkness has unsettled generations of readers with its haunting portrait of colonialism and brutal exploitation in Africa. Summary: "Acclaimed cartoonist Peter Kuper delivers a powerful interpretation of this controversial classic. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The blue flower fitzgeraldAs ever, I’ll be keen to hear opinions about that and any other subjects you’d like to discuss. I have a feeling there’s going to be a great deal to discuss in The Blue Flower, but let’s keep our options open and consider touching on The Beginning of Spring later on in the month. We’ll be able to say more about what to make of that as we read through the book. This is also a novel with a fascinating, if difficult, subject: the early German Romantic philosopher Novalis and his love for a teenage girl. Novelist Andrew Miller says it is “impeccable” and when the book came out in 1995 poet and translator Michael Hoffman wrote in the New York Times that it is “hard to know where to begin to praise the book” before also declaring it a masterpiece. Frank Kermode wrote in a 2010 introduction to the book that it is “the finest work of this extraordinarily gifted novelist”. Fitzgerald biographer Hermione Lee has called The Blue Flower her subject’s “beautiful masterpiece”. For a start, it has been showered with praise. 5/21/2023 0 Comments 2666 robertoIn Amulet we find mention of the ominous date–the cryptic title, which is never again mentioned in the body of 2666, making for the first mystery in a novel filled with difficult questions. In fact it would be necessary to look back to prior works to find its first stirrings. 2666 is a long and divergent journey, one of such great distance and with so many intersections that at the end of it all, which is really no end at all, the reader must think hard to remember the first leg of the quest. In Roberto Bolaño’s ambitious novel 2666, we see the myriad embodiments of evil conjured and unleashed, sometimes subtly disguised as just a glitch of the human condition, barely perceptible and not easily named, and at other times with fury from the blackest hearts of men, politicians, criminals and countries working together as one monstrosity. The proverb, “Evil thoughts spring from the heart,” is presented in the preface to the epic novel, Don Quixote. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The best lies sarah lyuAlternating between past and present, Remy narrates the point from when she meets Elise to the fateful night. I really enjoyed the writing style and the way Lyu set up the story timeline. I don't want to get into specifics because I don't want to spoil anything but the intricacies of their relationship were really well done on the part of Lyu. The relationship between Elise and Remy starts out innocent enough but as the two learn more about each other, the deeper they are drawn into the toxicity and manipulation of their friendship. It's been a good long while since I read a toxic relationship book and I forgot how dark and twisty and intriguing they are. Was it self-defence? Or something more malicious? As Remy tries to piece together that night, the police start asking questions and Remy has to decide where her loyalties lie. Her boyfriend, Jack, is dead - shot in the chest by Remy's best friend, Elise.
